Active from 2006 until 2014, the Strategic Fund for Turkey enabled funders to support the emerging human rights movement in Turkey during a critical transition period.
Advised by an expert local advisory board, we identified talented activists and nurtured new civil society organisations with great success – especially in the areas of minority rights, women’s rights and LGBT rights. For example this documentary My Child follows a group of parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals as they redefine what it means to be family.
We specialised in funding creative and innovative work to promote human rights in Turkey, including prison monitoring and reform, hate speech monitoring, transitional justice initiatives, the preparation of text books in minority languages, and most recently projects that raise awareness of the Armenian genocide. We were delighted when in 2013 one of the Fund’s grantees, Elmas Arus, a Roma film director from Turkey, won the first-ever Council of Europe Raoul Wallenberg Prize. Another of the Fund’s grantees, Turkey’s first LGBT civil society organisation KAOS GL, has been awarded the 2015 International Hrant Dink Award.
